You can paint in Excel?

Published on: January 11th, 2018

I admire painters. They bring so much beauty into our world and I am constantly amazed at the talent that people have. Imagine my surprise when I ran across an article about a retired gentleman in Japan who uses Excel, of all things, to create truly striking “paintings.” I keep staring at the pictures, wondering how on earth he did that. I invite you to wonder along with me, and perhaps you will be so inspired that you’ll find a new and artistic use for a program in YOUR computer.

Moving from earthly creativity to true space-age technology, learn about robots in space, taking on some repetitive tasks to reduce the astronauts’ workload. Returning to earth, we revisit camera and microphone security with a couple of product updates that should help you rest easier as you use your connected devices.

Excel: It’s not just for data anymore

Would you believe that the painting below was created in Excel? It’s true!

If this retired fellow in Japan could teach himself how to create such gorgeous paintings using an Excel spreadsheet, think what you might do with Excel, or some other software program in your computer. Read the article and look at the wonderful works of art created with a program designed for the furthest thing from art – and let your imagination run wild.

Updates in Camera and Microphone Security

If you’ve been following our weekly Tech Talks, you may recall that we brought a couple of security issues regarding cameras and microphones to your attention. We are happy to give you the following product updates – consumer’s concerns have been heard!

The new Lenovo laptops, including the latest model of its ThinkPad X1 Carbon and X1 Yoga, feature the “ThinkShutter,” a shutter that slides over the camera. The shutter can be opened or closed by a tiny switch located on the laptop near the camera. This sure beats tape!

And… New Samsung TVs no longer have mics that stay on. In order to use the mic, the user has to press and hold the mic button on the TV remote, and a blue light shows on the bottom of the TV screen to let the user know that the mic is live. Take your finger off the button, the mic shuts off and the light goes out. No more listening in on our private conversations, Samsung.
