THIS week it’s all about technology and transportation, from commuting by autonomous drones to “Uber Health,” a new service for medical appointments, to considering what technology you should look for in your next car or truck purchase.

I’ve read that today’s drivers expect to keep their cars for about 10 years, and if you think back to a car or truck that you bought 15 or more years ago and contrast that vehicle’s technology with the one you’re currently driving, there’s quite a difference, isn’t there? Where we used to shop around for things like standard vs. automatic transmission (don’t laugh, some of us are dedicated to our sticks!), disc vs. drum brakes, power steering vs. manual, etc., now we have to think about navigation and entertainment systems, Apple vs. Android, and on and on.
How do you purchase a car today, yet plan technologically for the future?

Currently in beta testing is Uber’s new service called “Uber Health,” a B2B (business-to-business) app to provide transportation for patients to and from medical appointments. To provide this service, Uber blends the latest in app technology with good old-fashioned low-tech phone calls. In essence, the medical provider contacts Uber Health to arrange for the patient’s ride, and then Uber Health telephones the patient to confirm. In this way patients who may or may not use smartphones are able to obtain reliable transportation to their appointments. Way to go, Uber!

Chinese company Ehang has successfully carried passengers in its autonomous drones and recently shared some flight footage with the public. Drones are a hot topic in many arenas – delivering food, defibrillators, life rafts, and now human passengers. Drones aren’t just for photography and spying on the neighbors anymore!
